Worship Music Selection
For almost a year now, congregation members have been meeting outside of church to select the hymns for the Sunday services. And I am very happy to announce that the Saturday service now also has its own selection time. Curious as to how the process works?
Let me fill you in!
Anyone and everyone are welcome to attend these hymn/song selection meetings. Both Sunday and Saturday meetings are announced in the monthly newsletter. Saturday night meets an hour before church service (4:30pm) usually the first Saturday of the month. (Unless there is a special holiday) And Sunday hymn selection meets the last Sunday of the month after church service (11:00am). (Unless there is a special holiday).
But what is the process for the selection of the music? First and foremost, the Gospel Lesson for the week is shared. Then the people in attendance find ways to incorporate both new and familiar music into the service that support the Gospel. The music selected is not about what tunes people prefer or like the best, it’s about how that music can connect to the message and inspire the congregation.
As Pastor Martin shared with the congregation a couple of months ago, in a survey done by the ELCA, music ranked the most important connection tool to a worship service with an overwhelming majority. As a biased musician, I agree with those survey results. I am so pleased with the congregation’s acceptance of new music and the support for these two music selection groups. Come see what selecting music is all about and join us for our upcoming Saturday or Sunday selections.
